Tommy Hilfiger began his business career while he was still in school, opening a small boutique in Elmira in upstate New York. Here he sold jeans that he customized himself, styling his products according to his customers’ preferences. Completely self-taught, Tommy Hilfiger decided to launch his first collection under his self-named brand in New York in 1985. First with his men’s line, then with lines for women, children, accessories, and shoes, Hilfiger injected a modern influence into traditional ready-to-wear American apparel. Omnipresent and omnipotent, Tommy Hilfiger opened a youth foundation in 1995, and he was named designer of the year by the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1998. Both chic and classic, the clothes and shoes from Tommy Hilfiger attract all fans of top-of-the-line sportswear.
